Authorize.net Refund Error - The referenced transaction does not meet the criteria for issuing a credit

When attempting to refund a transaction from your Box Office account, you may encounter the error: "The referenced transaction does not meet the criteria for issuing a credit."

This message usually appears for one of the following reasons:

1. The Transaction Has Not Settled

Authorize.net transactions typically take 24 hours to settle. You cannot issue a refund until this process is complete.

• Solution: Please wait 24 hours from the time of purchase before attempting the refund again.

2. The Refund Window Has Expired (180+ Days)

Authorize.net only allows direct refunds for transactions settled within the last 180 days. After this period, card data is archived for security, and the system can no longer send funds back to the original payment method.

• Solution: To return tickets to your inventory, process the refund in Yapsody using an offline payment option  (such as Cash or Custom). You must then coordinate with the customer to return their funds via an alternative method, such as a check or bank transfer.

3. The Transaction Was Already Refunded

The error will occur if the transaction has already been fully or partially refunded directly through your Authorize.net Merchant Interface.

• Solution: Check your Authorize.net dashboard to verify the status of the transaction.

4. The Transaction Is Under Dispute

If a customer initiates a chargeback or dispute, the card issuer pulls the funds back and locks the transaction. This prevents any further actions, including refunds.

• Solution: Review your Authorize.net account for any active disputes related to the transaction.

Any refund attempt through Authorize.Net will result in errors like: "The referenced transaction does not meet the criteria for issuing a credit"
